Looking for Hosts for Exchange Students arriving in August.

Dear County Fair Enthusiasts,

We are reaching out to animal lovers & horse enthusiasts about the opportunity to host our exchange students arriving in August who love animals – especially horses.   Where else to find them, but at the county fair! Hopefully, you’ll share with your friends and colleagues about the wonderful opportunity to host an exchange student!

CCI Greenheart, a nonprofit agency, is searching for volunteer host families for several high school foreign exchange students who love animals arriving in late August.  Our exchange students are 15-18 years old, they speak English, have medical insurance, and their own spending money.  They attend the local public high school where their host family resides from August through early June.     Students are selected to come on program  based on their English, academics and personality traits.  Our students participate in community service activities and make a positive impression in the local communities.  Host families who are open minded, active in their local community, and very flexible are sought to welcome students into their home as a family members.  Our host families provide a room (which may be shared with a same-sex  host sibling), meals, and a caring environment.  Students participate in family activities such as eating meals together, celebrating holidays, and doing chores.  Families come from many backgrounds including parents with teens/young children, empty nesters/retired couples, single parents, domestic partnerships, and single individuals with special permission.  All are encouraged to apply.

CCI Greenheart is fully accredited by CSIET, and we abide by US State Department regulations.  We provide host family and student orientations, enhancement activities, and monitoring of students.    We also have a 24 hour emergency hotline, and a credentialed guidance counselor on staff to keep our students safe.  Our local coordinators are certified by the Dept. of State, and are located throughout the US, so there’s always someone nearby to help with a student question.

Featuring:

Karina –(girl, Brazil)– 16 years old – wants to be a vet.  She loves animals, horseback riding, biking, handball, ping pong, soccer, swimming, ballet, drama, cooking, movies, reading, and watching sports.  She especially loves horseback riding.  She has no pet allergies & no dietary restrictions.  Karina is flexible about attending religious services with her host family from time to time.

Chiara (girl, Germany) – enjoys dressage & showing/horseback riding, photography, golf, skiing/snowboarding,dancing, listening to popular music, cooking, computers/internet, watching TV, and visiting  historic sites.  She doesn’t eat meat or fish (vegetarian), and is lactose/garlic/gluten intolerant.   She is happy to pay for any extra food products for herself.  She has no pet allergies, and is willing to attend church with her host family.

Vadim (boy, Russia) – 16 years old – says “horseback riding is the most important sport and hobby for me.   I’ve been riding for a relatively long time and can say I’m a good rider. The reason why this sport and horses themselves are very important for me is hiding inside of these animals. Horses are very intelligent and when riding, you work in partnership with a horse and that feels really amazing.”  Vadim also plays guitar, enjoys reading, martial arts, roller skating, swimming, programming/computers, gardening, volunteering, and tutoring.  He is comfortable around younger kids, and has no dietary restrictions or pet allergies. Vadim is an exceptional Dept. of State sponsored scholarship student.

Casey James grew up with a guitar in his hands, and he sang before he could talk. No surprise, then, that his 2012 self-titled debut album from Sony Music Nashville should blend those talents into a blues-soaked country sound all his own. “I’m a musician,” James shrugs, when asked to classify his creativity. “Not a guitar player, not a singer – I’m a musician.” And as sophomore single “Crying On A Suitcase” climbs the charts, the story behind his music makes more sense than ever: James has been prepping for this gig his entire life.

Believe it or not, the young man with the super-smooth style was raised in a place called Cool. That’s the name of the tiny North Texas town where James spent his childhood, enjoying the freedom of a simple rural upbringing and surrounded by a tight-knit family with deep musical roots. “The very first memory that I’ve got of music is listening to a Ricky Skaggs album at my Nana and Papaw’s house,” James recalls. “‘Walking In Jerusalem’ has this guitar intro, and then the drums and bass come in… I remember moving a chair over in front of the speakers, just sitting there and listening, and as soon as all the instruments came in, I would start the song over.” He laughs at the thought of himself as a toddler, climbing that chair to move the needle on the record over and over again. “My Nana actually came and made me stop because she was tired of hearing it,” he says. It was 1986, and four-year-old Casey had found his calling.

Both Mom and Dad were active in music at church, and although the two split up when James was young, they would each have a tremendous influence on his musical education. “My dad plays guitar and sings extremely well, and Mom was always singing,” he says. When he was 13, she bought him his first guitar, and the boy and his instrument quickly became inseparable. “If you’d asked me back then if I spent all my time practicing, I would have told you no,” James chuckles. “But the funny thing is that, years later, different people were like, ‘You spent every day, all day long, with the guitar in your hands. You didn’t go anywhere without it.’ I guess when you love to do something you don’t really think of it as practice. I was just having fun, and spending time doing something that I love to do.” Within a year, he’d mastered a classical Spanish guitar piece called “Malaguena,” a song he learned from his dad. James played it at eighth grade graduation – his first public performance.

At the same time, like any typical teen, James was expanding his musical horizons. “I went through big phases, musically,” he says. He started with a love of traditional country music like Merle Haggard and George Jones, then moved to more modern artists like George Strait; the first song he ever learned to play and sing at the same time was “The Dance,” by Garth Brooks. But it didn’t take long for his curious mind to stretch out and discover classic rock, and soon his repertoire included Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as Bob Seger tracks like “Old Time Rock N’ Roll” and “Night Moves.” (“Isn’t that great?” James says of the latter. “I don’t know what I’m saying, but I’m singing it.”) Since it was the ‘90s, he wasn’t immune to Seattle grunge, and he followed that with a blues phase that started in Texas with Stevie Ray Vaughn, and eventually took him all the way to the Mississippi Delta.

Unlike a typical teen, however, James wasn’t just soundtracking the struggles of adolescent life through his headphones – he was building a lasting relationship with the art of playing guitar.

Marvin Gardner-Blacksmith Demonstrator Nov. 7 -17 At the Volusia County Fair, DeLand, Fl

Marvin Gardner has been a Blacksmith for over 35 years, first as a hobby and later as a profession. Over the years he has enjoyed creating many blacksmith art pieces including an Eagle with an 18′ wing span as a memorial for 9/11 victims and a Memorial Cross with over 300 different leaves and flowers sculpted into it.  Through the years  he had the opportunity to create many custom  utilitarian pieces including stair railings, table bases, chandeliers etc. Recently, his wife and he have decided to redirect their focus to something they both really enjoy… Blacksmith Demonstrating.  Marvin had been the Blacksmith in the Primitive Skills Section of the  Ossahatchee Indian Pow Wow for 9 years. This experience had been the highlight of  his year and has caused his wife and he to change their focus from production to demonstration. What they enjoy most is the interaction with the audience and the young people who become their apprentices for about 10 minutes. During the demonstration, Marvin’s apprentice and he transform a tiny piece of quarter inch rod into a hand wrought miniature horseshoe. This horseshoe can be purchased as a key chain or necklace for.  Initials and or names can also be stamped into the handmade horseshoe.   The horseshoe is only a small cost but the look on their faces as they walk away with a “one of a kind” souvenir that they helped create is PRICELESS!

Marvin and Beverly are also enlarging their territory to include Schools and Churches to provide a “Field Trip Experience” for them without the cost and time involved with group travel since they take the Mobile Blacksmith Shop to them.
